The last day of
Margaret’s 59th year today at Marie
Callenders In Norman, OK
March
29, 2003
Our
waitress, Andie, seemed a little pre-occupied, like she would rather
be somewhere else, so I asked her: “If you weren’t working here
right now what would you be doing?” She paused only a couple of
seconds before a slight smile broke across her face, and she said,
“Well today is my last day here. Tomorrow I am giving a
shower for my best friend.
The day after that my mother is having a surgery, then in a
week, I depart for Europe and then into the Ukraine. After seven weeks I fly to
Canada to work on my masters degree in Environmental Policy.

Upon
further inquiry, she explained that in the Ukraine she would be
staying with a family and teaching young children. She was traveling under the
auspices of the Wesley Foundation.
Later
when she refilled our coffee cups I engaged her in a conversation
about John Wesley. Yes
she knew about him but not really much about what he did. I told her he had ridden
around England on horseback covering 40,000 miles in his
lifetime. He preached
about being “born from on high,” a concept that Jesus spoke of but
which the church of his day had virtually ignored.
Her
expression indicated a lack of interest, so I plan to keep praying
that God will bring this up to Andie and show her its
importance. Maybe by
the time she is in the Ukraine, her conversations with the children
there will include this valuable first step that Jesus spoke about
to Nicodemus as recorded in
John 3:1-21.
