Recently a
self employed barber was disabled for four months following an automobile
accident. Her income stopped. Already reeling from the
physical pain, she faced financial disaster as well.
Both legs were broken, one required five pins to repair the damage. She was unable to earn income for many weeks. She had used her savings to pay the medical co-payments. One cousin loaned her some money. When one of her patrons from the barbershop informed IHNM, Inc., we immediately sent a volunteer to her home. She invited a friend to join her. On the first visit they purchased and delivered groceries after phoning the woman about specific needs. At her home they learned details of financial needs and reported these to the office. We sent sixty letters to constituents and put the "need" on this web site, listing utility account numbers. Several sent checks directly to the utility companies. Others sent earmarked (tax deductible) donations which the ministry used to pay house payments. Two volunteers took a personal interest in the woman's needs. They visited her several times. On one visit, they took her eye glasses to an optometrist to repair the broken stem. Back at their church, the volunteer informed Sunday School class members, who took an interest in helping on other needs. There are no governmental or public charities that help in cases such as this. Disabled persons' financial distress is a perfect opportunity for caring individuals to respond to. Back to the top
