The call to service in the New Testament grows out of the Great Commandment of Christ - "love others as I have loved you." The whole New Testament message comes down to this command.  Our love of others defines who we are in Christ.

His death on the Cross, His resurrection, His gift of the Spirit of God to us -- these enable us to love others in a way that brings honor to God.

From that position we individually take up our roles as servants in various ways.   God in us is personally available to continually transform us into proper servants. In this process we keep on opening ourselves to Christ.

Because of the impact of the temporal on us, we continually need to be changed into more gracious loving persons.  By faith we recall daily, even hourly, that without Him our usefulness is limited, our own "righteousness" is but filthy rags (to use one of Christ's own sayings).

We are best equipped to serve others in his name, when we do so from a humble position of continual repentance.

Now when my life touches another, the Holy Spirit may use the connection.  I am relieved of having to be the "answer" man.    And I am protected from taking a judgmental stance toward the one Christ wants me to love.
