Rejoice always, the apostle Paul said in a letter he wrote while in prison.  For someone who has not already bought into the eternal plan of God which Jesus gives to mankind, this admonition is foolishness.

How can you praise God for “everything"? The unconverted person might offer praise to God when good things happen.  Get a raise, praise God.  Loose a job, question God.  But even worse it is possible to forget God all together when things are going well—take the credit yourself.  You planned your life, worked hard, played the office politics correctly and when a raise comes, you celebrate that all that you have done has paid off.

However, when God is sovereign, not just in church on Sundays but in one's life, then God can be praised in all things.  We acknowledge His activity in all aspects of our lives.   We know \that good can eventually come from everything that happens, when we love God.

“Rejoice always in the Lord, I will say again, Rejoice.”

THIS IS WHAT GOD SAYS THROUGH HIS SERVANT, PAUL.
Philippians 4:4ff
