My
friend Robert has a call on his life to serve others. All Christians
do, but Robert has a special gift of giving. His church had no program
of assisting the poor until he brought up the idea.
At first the deacons were less than enthusiastic. Eventually, however, they warmed to the idea, and Robert was appointed chairman of the local outreach committee For several years now he has given a sizable amount of his money to help individuals in need—the elderly or disabled poor and others. He also gives to his church. Now he is giving benevolence gifts through his church and hopes to draw others into giving in this way. Years of tradition causes most Christians to think only in terms of maintaining the cost of operating their own facility, and supporting overseas missions. Historically, it has not always this way in the church. As the Day approaches, I believe more of us will promote outreach to the poor. I know God desires His people to love neighbors who suffer. It's just a matter of time until there is a broader acceptance of God's will.
