The
man who first coined the phrase, "actions speak louder than words," may
have gotten the idea from the New Testament. Jesus referred to this
truism throughout His ministry. John the Baptist, too, made
this the center of his message about repentance.
"Produce fruit in keeping with repentance," he
said. "And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.'
For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham."
Saying you are a child of Abraham was no longer acceptable, John said. Now it's time to act like one. When one has actually repented there will be evidence of it. John called the evidence fruit. Today people just say, "Actions speak louder than words." |
