One More Stop
Before We Could Start Our Vacation
In November, 1989, on the way
out of town, the Lord knew of one more unscheduled stop before we pulled
on to I-40 to head west.
My Mother's birthday was a
few days away, and we had been scrambling to wrap things up at the office so we
could be with her on the big day. She would be 73 years old on April
24h.
The day before we left,
we put a message on the recorder saying the office was closed. We
kept one ear tuned in to the recorder, asking the Lord each time if He
wanted us to talk to the person. Knowing He is quite able to nudge
us. We called back people from previous days and continued to get
ready for the ten day trip.
A man calling from the
Sands Motel, left two messages even though our out-going message said we were closed
. He gave his first name and room number. We were not inclined
to call him back.
As I was going to sleep
that night I prayed and asked the Lord if there was anyone He wanted to
help before we left town.
The next morning
we seemed to be moving in slow motion and we were running two hours late
from our desired time of departure.
Finally the car was loaded;
we did one quick check to see if we left any thing in the house.
We decided to grab the log book we keep all the calls on. And we
noticed there was one message on the recorder that morning, apparently
we had not heard the phone ring. It was the man from the Sands Motel
again. Well, Lord, what about this person ????? Nothing, no
nudge to call him back, so we got in the car and headed south on Rockwell
to connect with Interstate 40.
For some inexplicable reason
we missed the entrance to the interstate and continued south over the bridge.
We pulled in a motel to make a U-turn. Looking at the motel sign, Dee and
I quickly exchanged glances. Oh, my gosh, it was the Sands Motel.
For just a second we started
to go on, then we both laughed and said this can't be an accident.
We had the room number
we needed on our log book (which we brought at the last minute).
Dee went up the stairs, knocked on the door and a young man on crutches
answered. He, his wife and daughter
had already experienced hard times. They had moved into the motel
after losing their home. He had been driving a truck, but no longer could with
the broken ankle.
From the car I could
tell the man was happy to see Dee. He gave Dee $80 toward his
rent and Dee agreed to add $59 and take it to the manager. In the car we talked it over, and decided to give the $80 back
to the man and IHNM paid the whole amount. Dee explained to the man how God had set
up the meeting.
What a wonderful way
to start a vacation. God gives hope where there is none.
We were so grateful to be the answer to someone's prayer
