DISABILITIES

As a Christian, our destiny is to serve others, in His name.  The New Life in Christ equips us to be the person for others.

The opportunities to serve are endless. In prayer we know when  to step out of our busy activities to serve another. Some of those who need our Good Samaritan love are individuals who become disabled by disease or accident.

Some persons have adequate insurance, or savings.  Others may be assisted by relatives. The most vulnerable, however, have no place to turn. They must depend on the mercy of others. Or do without the essentials, which further degrades their overall well-being.

It is vital that they receive assistance to pay normal household living expenses until they are able to return to work, or when Social Security begins paying a disability payment. There may be a period of a few months, or longer, when they are in limbo.

Should a local body of believers show God's love to these  persons?

I believe they should since this comes under the category of "loving others as Christ loved us." It is an expression of sacrificial love, the thing every Christian needs to practice. It is also a chance to remember the Golden Rule. How would I want to be loved?

The same motivation that gives us the desire to pray can lead us to 'give'. If my neighbor is distressed, God may lead me to pray for him, and in some cases, to tangibly help him too.

Some would argue that church money should only be spent on church maintenance, expansion. and mission outreaches. On the contrary, a church cannot spend most of it's money on self and still be seen as a people who love others sacrificially.

One church who gives financial support to In His Name Ministries includes this ministry among their "missionaries."

A local church might consider supporting a person during the period of time when they have no income.

Two or three small congregations could jointly assist on the basic household expenses for six months. On long term disabilities, even when a small disability income has started, the person may still need some occasional help with extra expenses.

Some donors use IHNM, Inc., sending gifts earmarked for a disabled person. When a church or group of churches has set up a compassionate project for a disabled person, IHNM, Inc., will give funds (as money is available) to assist that project .
